Tools, Techniques and Workflows for Film Post-Production

My name is Henry Karjalainen. I work as a freelance Post-Production Consultant and Assistant Editor based in Melbourne, Australia.

I provide expert advice to producers, directors and editors on the best path and options for their film projects. Further, I supervise all aspects of the post-production process from concept through to delivery - negotiating a path through budgets and delivery schedules.

Now more than ever filmmakers have a myriad of choices during acquisition and post-production, which affect picture quality, working speed, workflow efficiency, budgets and importantly, creative direction.

Post-production is complex and no matter the size of the project there will inevitably be important choices to be made. Without adequate post-production control, productions may face a range of problems which will hinder the orderly completion and success of the project. The impact of high-resolution data acquisition and delivery, further demands informed post-production expertise and supervision.

An important maxim to remember is that planning for post-production should begin as early as possible in pre-production.

Post-Production Workflow Innovation

The best post-production workflows cover the entire arc of the filmmaking process in relation to both picture and sound - that is, the workflow covers every stage from pre-production planning or digital storyboards; to image acquistion during principal photography; through to the final delivery and archival of the film.

Needless to say, post workflows also encompass a total vision for the project. The pipeline leaves nothing to chance and takes place in a highly managed environment with attention to lots of detail. The best workflows simultaneously engage new technologies and exisiting systems to create a functioning and seamless whole.

Mary and Max - RAW to DI Claymation

I'm currently working as Post Production Producer on the digital stop-motion animation feature film Mary & Max. Directed by Adam Elliot and produced by Melanie Coombs for Melodrama Pictures, Mary & Max is the full-length follow-up to the Oscar winning short animation film Harvie Krumpet. The film is now in the post production phase - shooting commenced in July 2007. In exciting news, we have just launched the website - Mary and Max !

In a world-first, we're using the latest generation Canon 1D Mark III and 1DS Mark III Digital SLR still image cameras incorporating Canon’s new Live-View feature to capture 4K and above RAW images using Stop Motion Pro HD Studio. Also, I'm working closely with Melbourne company XDT who have applied their extraordinary skills and talents to create beautiful film-like motion-picture images from a digital stills source.

The Post CMS is uniquely at the heart of the Mary and Max Post workflow controlling many automated aspects related to the day-to-day management of shot acquisition, image processing, 2K review, report and data/metadata management. Yes, this is all handled through the power of PHP, Apache and MySQL, so managing the Post CMS is as easy as browsing your favorite website. The Post CMS is fully cross platform and will run on closed networks.

We're all very excited about Mary and Max and hope to share more news with you all soon!

In early 2007 I completed work on the feature No Reservations which was released in the US last northern summer. Directed by Scott Hicks and edited by Pip Karmel, the film stars Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aaron Eckhart. Shooting took place in New York and I joined the crew as an Assistant Editor in May 2006 for the director’s cut in Adelaide, Australia.

Other recent projects include the documentary feature film Night, produced by Lizzette Atkins from Circe Films, directed by Lawrence Johnston and edited by Bill Murphy ASE. My role on the film Post-Production Superisor. Night is a spectacular big screen event film about Australia at night shot in 35mm, Super 16mm, HDCam and SD formats. Night had it's world premiere at the Melbourne Film Festival last July.

In 2005, I worked on Peter Jackson’s King Kong in the Editorial Department as 2nd Assistant Editor produced by Universal and Big Primate Pictures in Wellington, New Zealand. King Kong was released in mid-December, 2005.
